"DRIVERS, START YOUR ENGINES!"

On the race track of life, I am one of those odd people that when-ever and where-ever I go, I look for God to give me an opening to weave out of the congested pack to share the love of Christ.

"...let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Hebrews 12:1

Imagine race day in Daytona. The largest watched and attended sporting event in the nation. Here I am walking through the swarms of people while my husband is looking at the various vendors. The vendors are busy selling the hottest and greatest apparel representing their driver of choice. I am enjoying the "people watching" and the hype of the event... off in the distance I notice ESPN filming a "live" pre-race show. As I walk closer, I see a panel of race car experts weighing in and commentating on the biggest race of the year... LIVE!

Mmmmmm. Have you ever seen those over-zealous people behind the scenes of the camera, raising up their signs and waving for all of America to see? I think you know where I am going with this thought...

"DRIVERS, START YOUR ENGINES!"

I pull my husband aside asking for him to wait, "This will only take a minute." (If I were to compare my marriage like the race at Daytona; my husband is my finest pit crew chief, encouraging and supporting me during every turn of the race that God has laid out before us.) He is not at all surprised at my next daring move and encourages me to seize the opportunity.

I grab a sign and begin writing a short link to this prison site. I know 100's of 1,000's of people are in their homes, possibly entertaining with friends and watching the ESPN pre-race show. Will they see this crazy woman's sign waving behind the commentators heads and be curious enough to look up the link and pray for the inmates? This is my hope...

I am now holding my sign standing amongst the throngs of others towards the back. Like in the races, my pit crew chief (husband) encourages me to make a move away from the pack towards the front. I strategically weave towards the front, drafting behind other's who are trying to do the same. I see an opening and make my break for it pulling out in front!

I am now in the front of the masses of people. I can feel the other's press in behind me. I nervously lift high my prison sign - standing on the top of my toes and reaching up as far as my arms will stretch. I glance over to see the other fan's signs next to me. Some have written their favorite driver's names or a "hello" to their state or loved ones.

I snicker... as I imagine ESPN does not see too many "Prison" signs held high by mid-life female race car fans. My hope is that this sign will nudge the nation to pause and pray for the incarcerated across the world!

I stand in confidence knowing God has strategically directed my moves. I patiently wait... the roving eye of the overhead camera scans the countless fans and then turns in my direction and surprisingly stops! The camera is clearly pointing at my sign... the pause seems like forever. The fans next to me turn and stretch their necks to see what is written on my sign. I wonder if the producers are checking the link out on the internet?  I can see the producers talking to the camera men, I wonder what are they saying? The oddity of this sign gets the best of them and they zoom in... "we are now live on ESPN!"

Yahoo! I imagine hearing the crowd cheering like the final lap of an exciting race. Could you hear the angels cheering from Daytona?

God, once again, crosses the finish line to win the race and be honored in Victory Lane!

All For His Glory!

"THE GREAT WHITE THRONE OF JUDGMENT - IS IT TOO LATE FOR ME?"

"Guilty as charged!" 100% of the jail and prison inmates have heard something similar to this from their courtroom judge.

I personally am guilty as well... I am guilty of my sin against God and other's.
I'm confessing openly to all, that I am weak and unable to save myself.
I resonate with Paul when he says in Romans 7:15:

"I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do."

Do you also struggle with Paul's tug of war concerning sin? I doSome common questions I often hear and will address are: "Am I judged for my sin after I am saved?" "Why do I still sin if I am free from it." "What will happen to my family if they don't believe?" "If there is grace, why not just keep on sinning since I'll be forgiven?" "I am a good person, doesn't that count for something?"

Since this topic is widely ignored by Christians we will be discovering together about the "Great White Throne of Judgment" from Revelation 20:11-15. We will explore the misconceptions of this topic as well as the two types of judgment.

"There will be triumph and tears at the judgment seat of Christ." (Erwin Lutzer)

This is going to be a "hot" topic!  How do I know...?
Because, I am currently under attack from the enemy in my personal life. As miserable as this is, I do not want to miss the learning application of the trial for myself, as well as learning from this life experience as a teaching tool for the inmates.

I sure could use your prayers:
  1. For my time and preparation - that God would speak through me using scripture and role-playing.
  2. That the Holy Spirit will take this broad topic and make it understandable and applicable to their lives.
  3. That I will have God's heart and love others like He does. (I am a work in progress with this one.)

  1. That the inmates will attend and invite friends and the auditorium will be full to the brim. Pray for attentive listening and no prison disruptions.
  2. Boldly, let's lift these inmate's up to God, asking they will believe deep in their hearts they are accountable and will give an account to Christ for the deeds done in the body... whether good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:10)
  3. Pray this message will motivate them to faithful living in Christ.
  4. (Then there is the judgment topic... I am working on as well.) Please pray they will not become judgmental over other's as a result of this message but instead be filled with mercy and grace.
  5. The Holy Spirit will remove the chains of unbelief and the enemy will be bound.
  6. Many will invite Jesus to be their Savior.
  7. I am praying BIG... That this message will change all of our lives.

What about the prostitutes, the robbers, the murderers and the outcasts of society?
It doesn't matter how "good" you are, none of us is worthy. What we lack is the righteousness that God requires for entry into heaven. We all fall short compared to God's righteousness. Impossible!

"What we lack is Christ's righteousness that God requires for entry into heaven."

PLEASE KNOW that it is not too late to "trade" in your sins for Christ's righteousness. It is open to everyone... yes everyone! Even people living in the deepest, darkest pits of depravity. There is no sin too bad or terrible for Christ's love to erase. Jesus is waiting for you to pursue Him, for you to invite Him into your life. Did you know, Jesus also "rewards" those who put their faith in Him and then continue to live a life loving others?

Jesus is waiting... for you to pursue Him, for you to invite HIm into your life. When you confess and believe Jesus paid the price for your sins by dying on the cross... Jesus supernaturally exchanges your sins for His white robes of righteousness. The chains of sin's power are released from your life... forever!

Hang on, it gets even better!
Then Jesus places His Spirit IN us... "signed, sealed and delivered!"
A wonderful counselor to guide and empower us 24/7!

So how about you, what will you experience at the judgment seat of Christ? Is your name written in the Book of Life? Will you be seeing Christ as your Judge or your Savior? Together, let's spur one another on to look in the mirror and really ask ourselves, "Am I daily living my life with God's eternal vision in mind?"

"Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done."
Revelation 22:12

It is not too late to be freed from the penalty of "Guilty as charged."

PRISON TURF WARS - "Where Did Jesus Go For Three Days After He Died?"

An inmate's hand shot up out of the blue with a question in the middle of the church message. "Hey Shug, where in the Bible does it say Jesus went to Hell? You know, when they say 'he descended into hell?'" I detected a little attitude in her voice, almost a dare for me to find the verses. So I decided to act upon it.

(I love this about prison church services... there is never a dull moment.)

So I asked, in the middle of the service; "Would you like me to do a message next time on this topic?" I saw heads nodding and a resounding"YES" from the majority of the inmates. Some realizing they didn't know this is said in part of the Apostles Creed.

"...suffered under Pontius Pilate;
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell,
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is sitting at the right hand of God the Father Almighty..."

At this point everyone in prison was wondering..."Where did Jesus go after he died for three days?"

Alone in my office as I finalize the research on the Apostles Creed, Scripture and commentaries.  I came to realize through prayer, this controversial topic is really about "TURF WARS."

There are all sorts of "Turf Wars" going on in our lives. Just wake up and get out of bed and you'll witness good and evil battling it out for the "Turf" in our lives. Gangs fighting for their neighborhood turf. Addictions beating up their victims until they surrender from the battle. The invisible "Turf" in our souls that ache to be filled by the love of Christ and then we fill it with everything but...

Biblical Scholars are even battling for "Turf", dissecting these verses and forming a variety of logical differing conclusions. The question on the table for generations has been; "Did Jesus descend into hell?" Basing their queries from some of the content in 1 Peter 3:18-20, 1 Peter 4:4-6 and Psalm 16:1-11.

Pot stirring trouble... comes to the forefront when we mix one of my favorite verses in Luke. When Jesus and the criminal were hanging on the cross, side by side, death knocking on their door...

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."
Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
Luke 23:42-43

Join me in being still for a moment, resting in the thought that no matter what the scholars say, no matter what religion says, our God does not contradict Himself. (Paradise today vs. descended into hell.)  We may never know until we see Christ face to face what the true meaning of these passages are... but rest assured the "TURF WAR" battle for our souls has already been won!

Strengthen up my friends... we need to claim back the "Turf" that is rightfully God's. "Turf" that is already won by Christ on the cross. As you get out of bed today, remember, that you are already starting your day from the territory of VICTORY!

So... what are you waiting for?  Let's go out and boldly live that way!

RESCUING THE WANDERER IN PRISON!

Surprisingly, when I first began in prison ministry I was shocked to discover so many inmates that were Christians. I wrongly assumed they probably did not know God in order for them to commit this crime. Boy, was I WRONG! The enemy found them wandering aimlessly away from God and His TRUTH. Many inmates know their Bible, they were raised in the faith and yet they wandered and fell victim to the world of sin. We are all helpless, vulnerable and open to attack when we wander away from God and His Truth.

We are wrapping up our summer long Persevering With Purpose James series.
This weeks final topic is:"Rescuing the Wanderer!" James 5:19-20
  • I am guilty myself, of being wayward as a believer from one time or another. How about you? Many of these inmates are thankful that they are incarcerated. Yes, you heard me right - several are thankful they were rescued by God. Rescued from their life of drugs and crime and now have a "time-out" to return to God. Often I hear; "Thank you for rescuing me or else I would be dead."

James is clear...

"My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God's truth, don't write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God."
James 5:19-20 (Message)

Will you help us? We are no fool to the enemies' ways... helping the wayward is a spiritual battle which begins with the power of prayer. Will you pray for the message, and our prison ministry as we rescue the wandering inmates and bring them back to the cross?

Pray for all of us... that God would show us how to rescue those in our own personal families that are wayward and help lead them back to Christ.

Please pray for the Prison service:
  • That God would hand-pick and invite the inmates to come - pray for continued "room-busting" attendance!
  • Good listening, good timing and no distractions
  • Laughter, love and surrendering to Christ.
  • Thankful worship
  • Pray that the enemy would be bound by God and rendered helpless in these inmate's lives.
  • Freedom in the Holy Spirit during the message - God's Spirit would flow like a river through the prison!
  • EVERYONE WOULD BE RESCUED FROM WANDERING AND COME BACK TO GOD'S TRUTH!

Please realize the impact of your actions... By getting on your knees in prayer, you are doing for the prison what James said... "Rescuing precious lives from destruction!"

It just doesn't get any better than that!

"WAKE BOARDING" IN THE FLORIDA JAIL!

I am still living in the "WAKE" (wake-boarding sort of speak) from the awesome power of our Almighty God in the Florida jail this past weekend. I am humbled as I recall His awesome power and love for the so-called "outcasts" of society. I kept reminding myself: "It just doesn't get any better than this..."

I wish you were with me to have watched God rescue the inmates who were living in the dark choppy waters of life. Some were depressed and exhausted, many with their heads hung low. Yet, before our eyes, God transformed them into women of identity. They received a renewed purpose in life as they raised their hands and said "YES" to Jesus Christ... indescribable.

"It just doesn't get any better than this!"

  • To feel the power of God's "pull" as He led me through prayer and the message...
  • To feel the power of the Christ's "pull" as He embraced each of us in His love and forgiveness at the foot of the cross.
  • To feel the power of Holy Spirit's "pull" as we surrendered to Him. I continue to be amazed each time the Spirit lifts us up through prayer... not just the inmates and the team but the Officer shared he was moved as well...

"It just doesn't get any better than this!"

Here are a few tips that I've learned when expecting a great WAKE of miracles:

  1. Listen and prepare... be still and listen for God's voice to speak to you through prayer. Repent yourself, be open to His voice. God is the one who knows which inmates will attend and what message they each need to hear. Then trust that message and prepare for an awesome workout!
  2. Take action... We have to be prepared ahead of time and voice to words; "HIT-IT!" This is a term used for telling the driver (God) that you are ready to be pulled out of the water. Don't be afraid, trust in God's power. You cannot go wrong by showing God's love to the inmates.
  3. Hang on... Don't be alarmed, when you begin to get pulled out of the water, is when the greatest resistance is felt. But as you hang on and grip tighter to God, His love will PULL you through the deep dark waters of the jail. Before you know it, you'll be above the waters drag because God is in control. May I encourage you not to release the rope by getting frustrated with your ministry. Remember this is a Spiritual warfare and jail is right on the front lines. Please bring everything to God in prayer. As our Master throws you the rope, grip tighter to God's promises as He pulls you through the waters of His message.
  4. Expect a great WAKE of God's miracles. This is the best part...

Jesus continues to pass through the jails and prisons, using us to help rescue the inmates out of the dark, choppy waters of this world... for I am still flying high in the WAKE of His miracles in Florida!

"It just doesn't get any better than this!"

Is Prison Profanity Different Than Yours?

Profanity...

      Swearing...

            Cussing...

My mother used to describe any disrespectful language as having a "potty-mouth". All household members knew this toilet talk had it's consequences in our home. Since I was the third child, I have to admit, I saw a few of my siblings get their mouth washed out with soap.  Did I learn from their example? No... I had to discover the distaste for disrespect on my own.

It certainly was a tasteful reminder of what not to say in our home. James is reminding all believers of the same thing...

We have only a few verses left in our Prison Series on James: "Persevering With Purpose." This week we are taking only one verse and really "sudsing" up in it.

But above all, my brothers,
do not swear,
either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath,
but let your "yes" be your yes
and
your "no" be no,
so that you may not fall under condemnation. James 5:12

Prison inmates are fully aware of the consequences of their actions, many have issues with their language. Is prison language any different than at the corner gas station or the privacy of one's home?

James is writing this to all of us, to encourage us to "persevere" as believers. To rise-up and not only let our works reflect our faith in Christ, but our language is to be shown as trustworthy and honorable as well

Are you tired of a lifetime of anger and swearing? Is your go-to knee jerk reaction to bully others around with your mouth to get your way? It's not too late... don't let pride get in the way.

  1. Find you knees, bow down and repent.
  2. Ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit.
  3. Let God's Words become your words and your heart's integrity will be evident.
  4. Go to those you have hurt with your words and humbly ask for forgiveness.
  5. Practice, practice, practice self-control (If you fail, start again with number one.)

I have recently felt first-hand how someone's hurtful,
raging words can destroy a relationship.

I have also witnessed how our own words of
love and mercy can lift someone up
from a pit of darkness into the light of God's grace.

But above all...
let's say "YES" to choosing a language that is trustworthy and honorable.

SURVIVING SUFFERING IN PRISON... Using Patience and Perseverance

Is it true that those who make the biggest STINK get what they want?

This week in prison the message will be centered around James 5:7-11. James is clear that they key to surviving suffering is patience.  "Be patient then..." James 5:7

We will discuss the "do's and don'ts" in suffering. The "how-to persevere during the tough times" type survival skills. James encourages us to continue being patient until Christ's coming.

Are you tired of waiting?

  • Where are you patiently waiting for God to answer prayer...? Do you have a child who has turned their back to the things of God? Have you been praying unceasingly for years and years - yet they still remain stiff-necked, ignoring God and going their own way.
  • Are you patiently waiting for God to step up and step in to your troubles...? Your loved one is battling with addiction and you see no hope of them ever breaking free from it's stronghold. It's grip is ruining their life and destroying their future.
  • Are you patiently waiting for God to make the impossible become possible...? You need a miracle in your life; an appeal, a court hearing, a judge to have mercy on you? Perhaps things are immersed in such a darkness that you cannot even imagine seeing the light of day ever again.

What does a foolish person do? They make a big "stink" while going ahead and taking action on their own. A foolish person only grumbles and thinks of themselves without waiting on God and persevering.

What should a wise person do?  "You too be patient and stand firm because the Lord's coming is near." James 5:8 Not to only stand firm... that could be the easy part... perhaps the hardest part is... "don't grumble against one another brothers and sisters or you will be judged. James 5:9

Please pray that the inmate's simple "yes" to God will take root.

"YES Father, I want to stand firm without making a stink and grumbling."
"YES Jesus, I want to patiently wait for You."
"YES, Lord I want your blessings of mercy and compassion
as a result of my suffering and perseverance."

"Oh, how I trust and depend upon you Lord.
Amen!"

THE SUPERNATURAL POWER OF GOD'S ANOINTING IN PRISON?

"Me?"     "Today?"      "Anointed by God?"
A friend asked me what I learned while preaching in Africa and the prison? I didn't even hesitate, the words were right on the top of my head. I couldn't wait to share them...

"I learned about the power of God's anointing!"
"To feel like you are glowing with the Holy Spirit. To feel fearless before you walk into a prison of over 3,000 hardened inmates, convicted murderers, witch doctors, and demon-possessed... men." It felt like God had supernaturally anointed me.

Let me explain:
God first calls us to the service, then He equips us for the task - but so many people ignore the fact God anoints us as well. When you are anointed and just go on using your Spiritual Gift without claiming it, I believe you miss out on God's supernatural power pulsing through you.
"Oh, to be called, to be equipped and then claim God's promised anointing... WOW, hang on tight because you are going feel like you are flying."

Anointing is a word you just don't hear in everyday conversation. It means to be "set-apart" for God's purposes.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,to set the oppressed free,"
Luke 4:18

I clearly felt God's calling back in April - "Preach in the prisons around the world."  Now, let's fast forward to August - after prayer, fasting, more prayer and preparation, I was ready to go preach in Rwanda and the prison. In obedience to God's call, He reassured me that I am "set-apart" or anointed for a time such as this. I was full of anticipation waiting to see what our great God was going to do in Rusizi!

Was I nervous? Did I sleep? I'm sure you can guess what I did the night before the prison service?
"I was on my knees, spending time with my Lord." I had to unclog the arteries of my heart so I could be filled with Him. Less of me, more of Him. I didn't want any unconfessed sin to interfere with God's Spirit flowing through me. It was through confession and receiving His forgiveness that I felt totally prepared and anointed. Instantly, our intimacy and closeness increased. I shared openly my deepest thoughts and concerns regarding the prison the next day. I knelt and kept still (which is unusual for me) and I allowed God to tell me what the prison service was going to look like no the other way around. "Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

My old prayer life. My past prayers had been the common phrase... "Lord, please be with me and empower me." Father, please speak through me... etc. Those prayers have their place and purpose but...

God taught me a new way to pray!
Prayer on fire begins with PRAISE!

When you know you are called and want to be anointed - get off you couch and on your knees and pray in praise. Don't just plead with requests but claim the anointing. It will revolutionize your prayer life. To pray back God's promises in His Word I believe blessed you and pleases Him.

"Heavenly Father I have heard your call...
Almighty King... You have equipped and prepared me.
You alone... have anointed me!
Use me Lord, for your mighty purposes!
I expect and can hardly wait to witness your awesome power."

I know this may sound hard to believe...
When I stood in front of the intimidating prison doors, I could hear the singing of the inmates already begin. When the doors flung open... I became so empowered and filled with the Holy Spirit. I felt like I was... glowing. Yes, glowing!

I felt a supernatural love for each of these inmates that only God could pour through me. How can this be? How can God use such a sinful, broken woman such as myself to be called across the world to bring love to others despite my weakness?
The answer to my questions: God's anointing! He has set-me apart for a time such as this... "Here am I Lord. Send me!"
My heart ached for the lost and forgotten of this horrid prison system. As we walked into the prison the men were packed in wall to wall. I stopped and looked into as many eyes as I could, then I'd walk slowly a few more steps and look in each of their eyes again until I reached the platform. I wish you could have seen them light up with a smile and a wave because they were noticed. It moved me to tears.
WE WERE ON HOLY GROUND!
God was bringing the Good News of Salvation into this African prison. To wipe-out the witchcraft and voodoo, speak truth instead of the watered down teachings of works that has been so widely spread. For Jesus was coming into the prison...
It was like Jesus himself was riding in on a donkey and even the rocks were going to sing praises.
God rocked the house! Through worship, preaching, prayers and praise, countless inmates invited for the first time or recommitted their lives to Christ.
At the conclusion of the service, the men were weeping, yet joyful - imprisoned, but set free. God's love baptized the Rusizi prison in such a way that there was no room for anything else but Him!
I am so glad I did not miss the power of God's supernatural anointing.

Alleluia - Amen!

Next topic: "Are you anointed too?" Stay tuned for the next blog post addressing this question.

Is Demon Possession Happening Today?

This is not your usual conversation around the dinner table. "Is demon possession happening today?" It wasn't until we had to deal with it face to face in Africa that it became a topic of deeper reflection and conversation.

One of Satan's most clever tactics is to create the illusion (especially in America) that he doesn't even exist. To put doubt in the minds of people, to make it "cool" to be scared, or to "glamorize" evil and its dangerous consequences - all the while people are treating it as child's play.

My intention is not to magnify evil but magnify the power of Jesus Christ. For the battle is won, but evil is still among us.
Be wise... the Bible is very clear on this topic:

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers,
against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world
and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

Don't fool yourself...
I witnessed demon-possession first hand at one of our outdoor air events. Our SWIM Team arrived at the event and to our surprise another guest had come to disrupt and to discourage. A demon-possessed man was causing a disturbance while some men were trying to temper him.

I have experienced some persecution in the past from the enemy, but this was out and out, in your face demon possession. I had asked if it would be alright if I go over and witness what was taking place. I was curious about the process and wanted to add help and prayer support.

Sammy Wanyonyi discouraged me from approaching the situation that I might be a distraction from what they were trying to accomplish. A blond white woman tends to stick out in the remote parts of Africa. I often forget I look different than most everyone else in Rwanda. (Below the choir members helped me role play the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17.)

"Why has God wired me this way? I tend to be intimated with the small insignificant things in life... but someone who is demon-possessed... I become so filled with the Spirit and faith in what God can do, that I want to preach the gospel and help save him. Go figure?"

During the time this possessed man was with us, it was brought to my attention to notice the condition of the society. They were ignoring the situation, playing it down, possibly hoping this problem would just walk away? I began to notice what the local pastors and villagers were doing to handle this demon-possessed man. It seems they were used to this type of interruption. No one was flustered nor surprised. The choir continued singing like nothing was going on.

His eyes were like nothing I had ever seen before - a slight white film seem to cover his glossy eyes- almost like he was blind, yet he seemed to see us perfectly fine. One minute the demon-possessed man would reach out to the people seeking help. He looked so lonely and miserable - and then the next minute he was picking up a large rock and doing things out of control. Five men could not even hold him down.

I kept replaying the story of the demon-possessed boy from Matthew 17 that I had preached the evening before. Jesus rebuked the demon with one command and he immediately left the boy. Our God is a mighty powerful God and all bow to his command -  even the demons are afraid of Him. Amen!

The question I walk away is this:

Are we praying for those that are so emptied of God that the invitation is open for evil to come and reside?

Where is our heartfelt sympathy for those that are lost?

Do we bleed for those that are imprisoned in their own evil?

To live day in and day out without God would be a taste of hell itself. The bondage and suffocation from evil residing would be unbearable. Demon-possessed people are sometimes unable to help themselves - they need us to stand up and take notice - for us to stand in the gap and help free them through Christ's power.

After he continued in crude behavior, I sadly watched this man get dragged away and then the village people begin to dance and rejoice like nothing I had ever seen before.

I was confident God was going to do something GREAT in the presence of evil - and He did! Sammy preached the gospel message and many came to Christ.

Since that day I have often prayed for that man who was bound by demons. He wasn't in a physical prison like I normally see, but he was bound in his own personal hell by the enemy.

I believe through our prayers,
this man and many others will be released through the
POWER AND AUTHORITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST!

Why take the risk? If you suspect demonic activity, what could it hurt to ask a Christian to pray with you in authority of Jesus name to be completely set free!

"Almighty Father,

Help me to... Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness but rather expose them. (Ephesians 5:11)

I submit myself to you, God. Empower me to resist the devil, and let him flee from me. Help me to come near to you, God, and in your Word You promise to come near to me.  (James 4:7-8)

Help me to humble myself before You and to rest in your promise to lift me up! (James 4:10)

I am sorry for my sins, I believe you died for me, I need you in my life, make me new again, seal me with the Holy Spirit and help me to walk in Your ways!

In the Name of Jesus I pray.

Amen!"

(We will be praying a similar prayer at the prison this weekend after the message on James 4:1-12 "Resisting the Devil 101." Please pray for total surrender.)

Reflections On Rwanda, African Evangelistic Enterprises (AEE) and SWIM Ministries

I already miss the people of Rwanda... I have never been anywhere and experienced such friendly people. From the capital city of Kigali to the Ruzuzi District near the border of the Congo. It's surrounding villages and even in the prison -  everywhere Rwandan's were always polite and friendly, returning a smile or a wave.

I believe there is a revival happening in Rwanda moving throughout Africa. One evangelist describes it as a large body of water with many rivers flowing out from it. The Rwandan churches all coming together; "for a time such as this..." to bring everyone far and near to hear the Good News.

One pastor said, because of the efforts of AEE and SWIM Ministries he had a small congregation one week and it multiplied itself several times over the next. God is working in Rwanda. Amen!

African Enterprises -http://www.africanenterprise.org/.  AEE organizes evangelistic events throughout Africa and brings evangelism training to the districts themselves by equipping and supporting the Pastors. They collaboratively work with the churches to come together (which I love). Every evening we traveled to surrounding villages and shared the Gospel through outdoor air events. In addition, they send guest preachers to the Sunday church services to encourage and support the congregations. AEE carefully coordinates in advance all of the Festival events, securing translators, site locations and training counselors for follow-up. I am confident they do much more behind the scenes, but this is what I had witnessed in a short span of time.

When AEE arranged for our team to go into the prison this week, they brought in 1700+ outdoor quality made jackets for the inmates, a T.V. and baby clothes. It is common in many prisons that the organization coming in would have to contribute somehow to the welfare of the inmates. Not to mention they prearranged approval with the government, brought in and set-up large sound systems, stage equipment and everything needed to reach the masses.

Imagine what could be done if the funding was abundant?

When I was in the prison, the Prison Pastor said he thinks of AEE every time they worship because the microphones were donated by them several years ago. Imagine a prison where everyone can hear the grace and mercy of Jesus loud and clear. Well done AEE!

Sammy Wanyonyi founder of SWIM Ministries http://www.swimministry.com/2012/08/god-does-great-things-in-ruzizi-as.html reaches thousands of hurting people through preaching the Gospel to adults as well as children. (Check out his link about our trip.) It is difficult to describe Sammy's preaching style... I think it's powerfully transforming because it is simply full of God's love and mercy.

Stanton Peterson with SWIM Ministries has wonderful ideas brewing: His vision is for the children who believe in Jesus to be taught how to reach out to other children and in turn bring them to Christ.
Kids evangelizing to kids -BRILLIANT!

It was through SWIM Ministries that I was invited to come to Rwanda.

Instead of wondering if these ministries spend donated dollars wisely, I was amazed at how much they get done with such minimal funding? The money is still needed for these ministries to reach out to dark corners of the world.

Can you imagine what could be done for the people of Africa and beyond if we all chipped in and gave from overflow of our hearts?

I HAVE SEEN GOD'S MIRACLES IN RWANDA PRISON!

Friends,

I am going to be brief as we have landed in Kenya and have our first glimpse of spotty internet service.

How I have felt your prayers surround me while sharing the gospel. Thanks to your prayers. I did get into the prison on Saturday morning.

(This is a picture that resembles what we saw. We were not able to bring in cameras to the prison.)

Lord, have mercy on those inmates and the environment in which they live.

Unbelievable... people were everywhere. Inmates numbering over 2800 were crammed in tiny spaces to hear the gospel. Everywhere you looked there were faces. Above in the rafters, below on the ground, every nook and cranny was filled with inmates. The majority were men and a small choir of female inmates brought in together to hear the gospel message.

I preached from Luke on three short stories and related them to their lives: "The Ten Lepers" - I spoke of how the lepers were the outcasts of society, they had their own community. Ten where healed - but one was made whole!

The second story was "Jesus Heals the Demon-Possessed Boy." There is a lot of witch-craft and demon-possession the Rwanda (as we have witnessed) as well as the prisons. This boy from the Bible was healed by one word from our Lord and cast out.

The final story was about the "Criminals Who Were Crucified With Jesus." One mocked Him and hurled insults, and the other rebuked him and asked for Jesus to remember him. "Today, you and I will enter the Kingdom of Heaven."

They then were given the opportunity to invite Jesus into their hearts... AWESOME!

In total - We had over 1,400 inmates raise their hand and either ask the Lord Jesus Christ to enter their hearts for the first time or recommit their lives to Christ. It was overwhelming... to see the gospel melt the hearts of men who already have a taste of hell in prison. What a privilege to watch them surrender their hearts to Jesus, cry in repentance and then be set free and forgiven from their sins.

The rejoicing and singing was unbelievable while we were ushered out of the prison. We were truly anointed and on Holy Ground...

God is so good!

Only God Can Do That! Rwanda's Future Is Built On Forgiveness!

Genocide... In 1994 Rwanda experienced a terrible genocide with approximately one million people slaughtered by their neighbors and friends. (Remember the movie Hotel Rwanda) An example of how devastating Satan can be as he unleashes his fury on God's people.

Forgiveness... In 2004 prisons were overcrowded, inmates were living on top of each other, something had to be done. The President of Rwanda made a bold move, he released approximately 40,000 inmates from the prisons back into society. Why? Because healing needed to begin. The inmates who were released, were those who admitted their crimes and then took active steps of reconciliation (with the help of an intercessor) toward the victims and their families.

Gutsy but Brilliant. This opportunity has proven to promote healing and restoration in the country of Rwanda. It gives the inmates the opportunity to confess, repent and begin a new life - a "do over". This forgiveness has freed them both physically and spiritually.

Do you see the similarities...?  We each are given the same opportunity... we are each in our own prisons, chained to our pasts of hurt, guilt and shame. Each of us is separated from the life God intended us to have because of our sins. Its not through works or deeds done that wash away our guilt, it is only through Jesus. Plain and simple...When we approach our heavenly Father, when we admit to our past sins, He freely offers mercy, grace, forgiveness, freedom and restoration. Wow, who doesn't need that?

He totally erases our past sins, never to be remembered again. "Our sins are forgiven as far as the East is from the West." We can then begin this life of freedom, like the Rwandan inmates, we are reconciled to God through Jesus Christ our intercessor. We are given the opportunity through our Lord of second chances, to confess and release those chains of sins that keep us buried in a life of depression and darkness. Is it becoming overcrowded in the prison you are living in? Maybe it has been awhile since you've reconnected with Jesus? Let me join you in prayer, as we approach the throne of grace and together enjoy the freedom only Jesus can give.

When I speak outside of the prisons, in the churches and open air events, I am assuming that most of the listeners will be indeed these very same survivors sitting side by side next to their perpetrators.

Only God can do that!

Speaking Schedule For Rwanda

God is going to do something great on this trip... I know it! Right before we left, my tickets for the entire trip were mysteriously deleted by the airline. After two hours of diligent searching and trying to restore the problem, customer service was going to give up. I was told I was going to have to fly on different flights and by myself. Well, what they didn't know was what a big God I have. I persisted they kept trying for I was confident I was going to be with my team.  What do you know - low and behold - the one true God is again reigning victorious and I am on all the same flights with the team.

So this is now the running joke with the SWIM team. "At least Shug has a ticket." Currently, we are in Amsterdam, should I be surprised they are having trouble finding my ticket and confirmation number? Two more legs of our trip until we get to Rwanda and the joke of Shug's mysteriously missing tickets continues...

For a unique perspective of our trip may I also encourage you to follow Sammy the founder of SWIM Ministries and his posts at www.swimministry.com

We are currently in Amsterdam on a 8 hour layover and I wanted to send you an updated schedule of our team's speaking events. How I depend on your prayers for these life-changing events. Our last day is next Sunday, (the schedule is difficult to read) it is when I will be "prayerfully" granted permission to go into the prisons to preach. Again, I feel confident God will prevail.

Thank you Lord for your continued protection and sense of humor. "For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength!"

Stay tuned...  Love, Shug

Postings From Rwanda

Dear Friends,

Today is the day - my life verse is coming true; "Here I am Lord, send me!" Isaiah 6:8.

I am leaving tonight for Rusizi district of Africa (dark red on map) until August 14th!

I am experiencing many emotions: excited, nervous, anxious, overwhelmed, blessed and most of all I feel God's anointing!

I could really use prayers for God's divine words to flow through me as I put the finishing touches on my talks for Africa. I have researched, prayed and have felt God's guidance - now I just need to finalize them on paper.

It is through your prayers that God's power is released...
  • God would multiply the time in my life so I can thoroughly prepare.
  • I would be protected from any of the enemies schemes.
  • We would have clear access into the Rwandan prisons.
  • That I would be teaching from the overflow of the Holy Spirit in my life.
  • God would call the lost, lonely and unsaved to hear the gospel message.
  • I would have a supernatural love for the listeners.
  • God's anointing and power would be on me as I share the gospel in the churches, open air preaching and prisons.
  • As a result of God's mighty power, thousands would cross over from eternal death to everlasting life.
  • Our whole team would be used for noble purposes to further His Kingdom!
Many of you have asked that I post my adventures from this God adventure. Please stay tuned to this blog (or become a member to this site and you will get posts to your email) I will post whenever I have access to WIFI.

I know that this is a lot - but I have a BIG GOD! Yahoo!

Much love,

Shug

Really God... Prisons In Rwanda Africa?

Hello Rwanda?

Why does God give us this craving... a heart to love the lost, mercy to heal the hurting and a calling to share the Good News with the unsaved of this world?

Could it be because Jesus warns us about the final judgment in Matthew 25? "I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me."

So am I to understand Christ receives the treatment we give to others?  "I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me."
Then Jesus gives us a kicker at the end of this passage... "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Very sobering isn't it?

What's the bottom line here?  I think James hits us over the head and mirrors this very thought in Jame 2; "Faith without deeds is dead," "Hey Shug, what good is your faith if you don't show Christ's love through your actions? Basically, what you do to other's - you are doing to Christ.

Peer with me into His perfect Word, do you see God's mercy and love saturated from cover to cover? "God's displays His love for us in action?" If you just love someone from a distance, in your head and you never act upon that love... what good is it? God shows us day-in and day-out that love is an action.

What good is your faith if you sit in your chair and read?
"MOVE AWAY FROM YOUR COMFORT ZONE"  - Together lets show Christ's love through our actions!

  • Come with me...  as I go to Rwanda, Africa and join Shine On The World International Ministries (S.W. I. M.) Ministries.
  • Come with me... as we preach in the prisons, churches, open air events and leaders conferences.
  • Come with me... as I am desperate for your prayers.
  • Come with me... and partner prayerfully and financially with S.W.I.M. (see below link) to bring hope to the lost, hurting and unsaved.                http://www.swimministry.org/

Many of you have requested that I blog short updates and prayer requests during our Rwanda trip from August 1st - August 14th.  May we all have a front row seat to watch God in action, as people cross over from eternal death to everlasting life!

Yahoo - this is indeed going to be quite the joy ride!

Prison Ministry: Breathless in Colorado

MAJESTIC! I have just returned from the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Estes Park, where I was attending the Colorado Christian Writer's Conference www.writehisanswer.com.

As a first time attender, I was initially intimated by the enormous task that I believe God has placed on my heart. Completion of the book (working title), "Rock'n The Rebels":  Revitalizing Church In Women's Prisons.

Throughout the four days I met with authors, agents and various publishing houses. The prestigious speakers not only encouraged and inspired me, but also challenged my call to "Write His Answer." This is a tough topic for a tough audience. A select few are called to prison ministry, but for those who are... we need to rise up and serve God with excellence!

Was I overwhelmed with this publishing beast? Embarrassingly yes. It hit me while I was walking outside from one session to the next. There I was looking down at the sidewalk becoming more deflated with each step I took. I was blinded by the light of my immure abilities against such accomplished writers. It was like comparing young David against the mammoth Goliath. Unexpectedly, I stopped mid stride, I could feel the doubt quickly suffocating my future. (Or perhaps that was the high altitude making me breathless?) I raised my eyes to see where I was going and there it was... right in front of me was this incredible masterpiece I was truly seeing for the first time...

The majesty of God's creation. Why do we miss what is so obviously right in front of us? This should be a great visual reminder for all of us as God gently comforts us; "Don't worry, surrender to this process to Me." "Allow Me, the Creator Himself, to move whatever mountains are in front of you... if it is My will, it will be done!"

May I encourage you that this is not a passive process nor an excuse to hide behind your faith. We must have faith and work together WITH Christ. Not too long ago, God impressed on my heart; "Get the book done!"

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God Reigns!"  Isaiah 52:7

Confidently in Christ,

Stuck In A Rut? BIG God... BIG Dreams... BIG Expectations!

STUCK IN A RUT?

With prison ministry (or any other ministry) you are called and equipped by God... you are part of a hand-picked team... but now you find your team is "stuck in a rut".

(Definition of RUT: A routine or pattern of behavior that has become dull and unproductive.)

Dull, lifeless and flat-lining... I have seen time and time again, ministries that are relying on what happened in the past. The Apostle Paul was always looking for new ways to share the gospel and encourage his "team" of churches. He wrote passionately to them, he encouraged them, traveled to them, spent time with them, sent fellow disciples to train them and most importantly - he prayed for them.

God is far from boring, He is always creating something new. Shouldn't our ministries shake it up and try new things as well? By doing this, you will keep your team fresh and the church service vibrant and full of energy.

THINK BIG! You might be thinking; "Well, maybe some new worship songs would change it up?" Put on new vision glasses - perhaps God is prompting you to make it happen so that you have an entire worship band come in and lead the worship?

DREAM BIG! Ask the Spirit to help you think out of the box. What BIG vision has God put on your or your team member's heart for this ministry? Solicit ideas from your team, listen to it, don't ignore it, and (here is the key) act on it - but before you do that...

PRAY BIG! You might be frustrated with one small boom box for worship time, a small inmate attendance and an untrained team...

"You do not have, because you do not ask God." James 4:2

ASK God to give your team His vision and wisdom for this ministry.
ASK God for a rock'in service.
ASK God to expand your territory and increase your attendance.
ASK God to call up a team who will have a love like Christ's for the lost and unsaved.
ASK God to train you or bring in excellent teachers to train your teams.
ASK God to empower you to ACT on it!

"If any of you lacks wisdom he should ask God, who gives generously without finding fault, and it will be given to him." James 1:5

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR MINISTRY FRESH:

Do you have regularly scheduled team meetings keeping everyone up to date with current training methods?
Do you strive to keep the communications with the ministry team, church leaders and prison chaplain open and flowing?
Are you attentive and flexible to God's leading?
When was the last time you listened and acted on the team's suggestions?
(Please keep in mind, not all things will work within the constraints of the prison environment, on the other hand, don't feel limited - God will amaze you if you just ASK!)

"But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blow and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord..." James 1:6-7

EXPECT BIG! When we expect big things from our BIG God it pleases Him. It demonstrates we put our faith and trust in Him. Will you join me in praising God now, ahead of time, for answered prayer.

God can help you climb out of that prison ministry rut today... by thinking, dreaming and praying BIG!

ALL FOR HIS GLORY!

UNEXPECTED SURPRISE BEHIND BARS!

Unexpected surprises are not always good when they happen in jail! But this case was different. I was invited to preach two consecutive Sunday services in a large Florida county jail, but I didn't expect the outcome that I received...

The jail service was filled with anticipation as the women filed in cuffed and counted. The majority of inmates were downcast and tired as they entered the service. Regardless of what I saw on their faces, during the talk you could feel the Holy Spirit's momentum building. By God's grace alone, these incarcerated women were uplifted and energized by the end of our time together. I wish you could have heard the sound... the sound of a room filled with inmates asking Jesus into their hearts and lives. These lovely women shared their excitement - along with the challenge to bring cellmates and friends to next week's service.

But it was what happened AFTER the last inmate left the room that threw me for a loop. Never in my prison and jail ministry has this happened...

A rush of excitement came over one of the officers that had been on guard during the service. He bounded forward saying; "I feel so inspired!" I have never heard a service in here that has moved me so much!" "I cannot wait to come back next week." Then in sudden disappointment he said; "Oh, that's right, I don't work next Sunday..." (I could not help but chuckle under my breath.) His excitement was contagious as he continued to share how the message had moved him to speak up.

Don't be fooled my friend and don't get discouraged in your ministry. For God is working overtime in the prisons and jails across this country! You never know who is listening and is transformed by the power of the gospel!

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9

Expect the unexpected from our great God!

NEW FUTURE: "Living in Faith and Victory!"

GOD IS IN THE HOUSE!
We have an exciting service planned for this Saturday in the prison. The final message in the series: "God's Glorious Makeover for 2012".

This last message will be rock'in with hope for a "NEW FUTURE: Living in Faith and Victory!" (Are you Wishing To Be Something You're Not?)

Please pray: (Pray this for yourself as well.)
  • Each person will experience a "make-over" in Christ, living victoriously through their faith.
  • All will surrender over their past, letting go of the mistakes and shame that bring defeat.
  • Everyone, (including all of us) will take intentional steps, through Bible study and prayer, to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ.
  • God will stretch our faith in such a way, that we all will be a VICTORIOUS testimony of our Lord's mighty power.
"Please Lord, bring in the lost, the lonely, the angry and the hardest of criminals.Only you can soften their hearts and transform their lives.Come Lord Jesus, and do an awesome work this Saturday night in the prison."

Join me in giving thanks to God ahead of time, because we believe in the power of the cross...

FOR MANY INMATES TO EXPERIENCE A NEW FUTURE,
LIVING IN FAITH AND VICTORY!

"God WILL be rock'in the house!"

Prison Makeover Series: "NEW LIFE!" Out With The Old... See The NEW!

BEFORE AND AFTER...
Have you seen them? The before and after pictures are amazing! To see snapshots of people who have been transformed through a "makeover".  These snapshots enable us to see people who are born with deformities and then witness their restoration through reconstruction.

Are you ready? Restoration is a process and takes some initiation on our part. The first step to any authentic "makeover" is to make an appointment for a one-on-one consultation with the professional.

That is exactly what we did, we opened Isaiah 43:18-19 and listened to God's prescribed advice for us...

"Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past."
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland."

Did you hear the strong voice of confidence that God resounds in these verses? "See, I am doing a new thing!"

Boy, is He ever! Our whole team witnessed the transformation. The women walked in looking downcast, tense and depressed... and what sprung up? A NEW woman in Christ!

Through God's own Words -  He transformed, uplifted and filled everyone with hope for a NEW life in 2012.

Awesome!

Love,
Shug
